Crowns Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are prosthetic teeth that cover and reinforce damaged teeth. They can also help fill in areas where teeth are missing entirely. Crowns can also restore your biting and chewing abilities and stabilize your overall dental health.

When should you consider getting a crown?

You may need a dental crown if you’ve experienced any of the following:

  • Root canal
  • Missing teeth
  • Damaged teeth
  • Cracked or discolored teeth
  • Oversized cavities

If you’ve experienced any of the above, you should get in touch with Comprehensive Family Dentistry today to see if getting a crown could help you.

What types of crowns are there?

Comprehensive Family Dentistry prides itself in using the highest quality materials to ensure that your crown lasts a long time.

In most cases, crowns are made of ceramic, porcelain, stainless steel, resin or metal. During your consultation, you’ll discuss which material best suits you. Many patients choose ceramic or porcelain crowns, because they look more natural, and they can blend in well with the other teeth.

How are crowns placed?

If your dentist recommends a crown to support a damaged tooth, they’ll first numb the affected area and file down a small portion of the enamel to accommodate the crown.

Your dentist will then make a mold of your tooth so your permanent crown can be made. In the meantime, your dentist will give you a temporary crown.

When your permanent crown is ready in a couple of weeks, your dentist will place your crown and make any adjustments necessary to ensure a proper and comfortable fit.

In most cases, your crown should last up to 15 years.

Does a crown require extra care?

You should think of a crown in the same way you think of your natural teeth. In other words, you should brush and floss at least twice a day, avoid hard foods, and schedule cleanings at Comprehensive Family Dentistry.
